Hops, curtsies, promenades. It’s a wonder how such strenuous movements can be done with the tiptoes of men and women. During an enchanting performance however, one cannot stop to consider these questions, as all eyes remain locked on the stars who glide on the dance floor–ballerinas and ballerinos, as they are called, while they command attention with their fluid grace.

This beauty however, cannot be achieved without significant practice and the support of great academies. One of them is the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Recognized throughout history with its former name, ‘Imperial Theatre School’, it’s the first ever theatrical dance school in Russia, which held a key role in developing ballet into what it is today.

Now in 2024, the academy is still one of the leading schools of ballet, which introduces quality graduates to the professional ballet scene. Hence, any shows featuring alumni of the academy are better assured to be of high value. This includes the Freed Ballet.

Notably involving graduates of Vaganova Ballet Academy as directors and dancers, each of their shows promises a stunning performance. Furthermore, their acts are hosted in several countries including Indonesia, granting us an opportunity to revel in the best of Russian ballet in our home country.

This August 3rd, Freed Ballet is to be back on Jakarta’s Ciputra Artpreneur stage with a rendition of Swan Lake. Featuring two acts of 40 minutes each, the first act will present the creation of the world in a neoclassical style called ‘The Beginning’. It will be further enriched with live actor dialogues and music by Artem Demidov.

After an intermission, the second act will set about, showing a timeless classic–Swan Lake–attributed for modern audiences. Born from the directions of Vaganova Academy’s top graduates and Mariinsky Theatre’s former soloists, this show promises a satisfying experience of high level artistry that touches the soul.
